    On your phone or a computer. In England, type your permit number and your site fills itself in from the Environment Agency register.

  2. Add your Defra code

    The code from your organisation's account on Defra's waste tracking service. How to get it.

    No code yet? Carry on.You can log loads before you have the code. Until it's linked, it builds Defra's own spreadsheet for you to upload.

  3. Book in your first load

    Tap a load you've had before and you only type the ticket number and the weight. It remembers your carriers and your codes. Your first load, box by box.

I'm Wilf Byrne, a sole trader in Staffordshire. I built Byrne Waste Tracking and run it myself.

You set it up yourself, with no sales call. If you get stuck, email me. I read it and I reply myself, the same working day. Never a bot.

Most of what's changed in the app started as a question from a site. I'd rather put a problem right in the app than explain it twice.

What it doesn't do

  • It isn't an app-store download. It runs in your phone's browser.
  • It doesn't read a weighbridge. You type the weight off the ticket.
  • It only sends to Defra by itself once your Defra account is linked.

    Pay nothing until 1 January 2027, the day Scotland's duty starts. DAERA say January 2027 for NI.

There's no card to enter until you start it. Stop paying whenever you like, and download every load you've recorded as a spreadsheet.

Working with a waste consultant? Your price is the one you agree with them, and you see it before you pay anything.

Not from me: Defra charge each organisation £26 a year for their own service (in Scotland it goes to the Scottish Ministers). You pay that to Defra.

07Straight answers

What people ask first.

Does it apply to my site?

If you hold an environmental permit and take waste in, it almost certainly does. England and Wales from 1 October 2026. Scotland from 1 January 2027. Northern Ireland: DAERA say January 2027.

Carriers, brokers and dealers come in from October 2027. Waste exemption holders come in a later phase, and Defra haven't set a date.

Check your permit, free: type the number and see what the register holds.

What's the £26 a year?

That's Defra's own charge for their service: £26 a year per organisation, paid to Defra (in Scotland, to the Scottish Ministers). None of it comes to me. GOV.UK say the first payment is due by 31 January 2027.

Is there a contract?

No. It's monthly. Stop whenever you like, and you can download every load you've recorded as a spreadsheet first.

Do I still need paper?

Yes. Transfer notes, consignment notes and your returns carry on alongside the digital record. Defra haven't published an end date for them.

Is it on the GOV.UK list?

Yes. Byrne Waste Tracking is listed on GOV.UK as a compatible software provider. Check the list before you buy from anybody, including me.

What if it gets something wrong?

Each load is checked against Defra's rules before it saves, so problems are caught before they're sent. If you spot a mistake after it's gone, you correct it in your Defra account using the load's reference. Correcting a waste record.
